75 Years and We’re Still Here

As the Sheboygan Theatre Company begins its Seventy-Fifth Season of providing quality theatrical entertainment to the community, the organization is again holding the line on the cost of tickets. Therefore local families can together enjoy five great nights of entertainment without traveling great distances and paying the high price of gasoline.

Continuing the same great deal as the last two years, the cost of a Season Ticket remains at only $50.00 plus tax for adults.  This is an average of $10.00 per show and represents a 50% savings over the single-ticket, box office price!  For the $50.00 or more one might pay to see a single show at many venues, The Sheboygan Theatre Company is providing five times as many nights of entertainment!  Subscriptions for the Anniversary Season, sponsored by The Stefanie H. Weill Charitable Fund, Inc. and Acuity and the Arts, are on sale now.

Of special significance is that this is family theatre with every single production suitable for the youngest of children.  Therefore the student price for youngsters through high school and those in college is just $25.00 plus tax for the season. That’s an average of $5.00 apiece and represents the same 50% savings over the single-ticket price!  This means that a family of two adults and two children can enjoy five nights out together for a total cost of just $157.50.

Moreover these are big, well-known, award–winning productions.  Sheboygan Theatre Company subscribers can look forward to a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece; a popular Broadway musical that mimics the Elvis Presley story; a musical celebrating the founding of our country; a heart-warming, Pulitzer Prize-winning drama which should be seen by every generation; and a brand new, hysterically funny, modern comedy. The five-production lineup provides all the theatrical variety one could ask for.

The season begins with “Bye, Bye Birdie,” a fun-filled musical that brings back the 1950’s with all their innocence, charm and excitement.  Sponsored by Wilson Mutual Insurance Company and featuring a book by Michael Stewart, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams, it tells the story of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type Rock-and-Roll star. About to enter the army, he travels to Sweet Apple, Ohio, to bid goodbye to a typical American teen-age girl in a publicity stunt that puts the town into a spin and causes people of all ages to swoon.

At Christmas time the Vollrath Company will sponsor “The King and I,” a classic of the American Musical Theatre and a truly unique love story in which East meets West. The relationship between the King of Siam and an English widow hired as tutor to his many wives and children is a dramatic, richly textured and uplifting tale of enormous fascination.

The New Year begins with Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town,” sponsored by Community Bank and Trust.  Poignant, profound and picturesque, yet humorous and delightful, this literary masterpiece explores life, death and the hereafter as seen through the eyes of the people of simple Grovers Corners, New Hampshire, at the turn of the nineteenth century.

“Over the River and Through the Woods” by Joe DiPietro has enough ethnic humor to keep audiences of every nationality rolling in the aisles.  The fun begins when a young guy who devotedly has Sunday dinner every week with both sets of beloved, yet annoying grandparents must tell them that his new dream job will take him across the country.

The season concludes with an inspirational, dramatic and yet humorous recounting of the meeting of the Second Continental Congress.  Sponsored by Pemco, “1776,” with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, realistically brings to life one of the most important events in the history of the United States.

At the price of just $50.00 for adults and $25.00 for students for all five shows, the Sheboygan Theatre Company has two types of subscriptions that offer membership benefits and are designed to meet a variety of schedules.  The reserved season ticket guarantees the same evening and the same reserved seat for all five mainstage productions.  A flexible season ticket, ideal for those with complicated schedules, offers all the benefits of a reserved ticket but allows customers to choose the performances they wish to attend.

Season tickets may be purchased over the phone, at the theatre’s office in the Community Recreation Department during regular business hours or by mail using the form found in the season brochure. The Theatre Company will also have its regular booth at the Sheboygan County Fair.  For more information see the Theatre Company website at www.sheboygantheatercompany.com.  To receive a brochure or to order Season Tickets call 459-3779.
