The Sheboygan Theatre
Company will continue their Seventy-Sixth Season on Friday, March 19 with their
production of the 1968 Neil Simon comedy. “Plaza Suite.”
Sargento sponsors the show and the season is funded
in part by the Stefanie H. Weill Charitable Fund and Acuity and the Arts.
“Plaza Suite” is a comedy in
three acts. Each act tells the story of a different couple each with their own
issues of love, marriage and happiness. Each couple spends time in the Suite
719 of the famous Plaza Hotel in New York City. While the problems these
couples face are of a serious nature, the comical surroundings and writing,
makes the situations hilarious and light-hearted.
Karen and Sam Nash are the
couple profiled in Act I. The Nash’s have been married for over 20 years,
although they can’t agree on how long they have actually been married or even
the date. Sam Nash returned from the Navy, married his sweetheart and lived the
‘American Dream.’ Now at 50 years old, he is realizing life has passed him by
and he is doing everything he can do to recapture his youth. Karen Nash is the
opposite and enjoys growing older with her husband. Much to the puzzlement of
her husband, Karen enjoys the freedom and honesty it brings not having to be
tied down by age or appearances. Their stay in Suite
719 brings up a lot of issues, both serious and funny.
Act II shows the former couple
of Jesse Kiplinger and Muriel Tate. The two were once caught up in young love
but ultimately decided to take different paths. Jesse moved to Hollywood and
became a successful movie producer. Muriel got married and had three kids.
Their lives are very different now, but Jesse is conflicted of the love and
woman he never forgot. Muriel is conflicted over her life and marriage not
being as perfect as she makes it out to be. When these two reunite it is a cat
and mouse game between them to see if the meeting is an innocent get together
or something more.
Finally, Act III deals with the
combustive but loving married couple, Roy and Norma Hubley.
Moments before their only daughter is to walk down the aisle, the daughter
barricades herself in the bathroom refusing to get married. Roy and Norma do
all they can to get her out, almost killing each other and themselves in the
process. Act III gets pretty outrageous with its slapstick moments.
