The Sheboygan Theatre Company announces that open auditions for the musical "1776," the final production of the 2008-2009 Anniversary Season, will take place on Monday and Wednesday, April 6 and 8.

With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, "1776" is a dramatic musical detailing the First Continental Congress and the writing of the Declaration of independence.  The show requires a cast of twenty-five men and two women.  With no chorus, all parts are specific characters.  All performers do some singing, but principles with solos or featured songs include John Adams, Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martha Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Dickinson, Roger Sherman, Richard Lee, Robert Livingston, Edward Rutledge and a courier.

Though auditions do imply some competition, the process is made as pleasant as possible. Direction is given along the way and people need not fear that they will in any way be embarrassed.  Men need prepare a song only if interested in a featured singing role.  Songs should be no more than a minute to a minute and a half and should not be from the show.  Auditions will also include reading from the script and possibly some movement.

Initial auditions will take place at the Leslie W. Johnson Theatre at Horace Mann Middle School, 2820 Union Avenue, Sheboygan, beginning on Monday 6:30 p.m.  Callbacks will be held on Wednesday at 6:30.

Scripts are available for a forty-eight hour loan at the Theatre Company’s office in the Community Recreation Department but require a deposit of $25.  They may be picked up Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and must be returned by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6.

“1776” will run from May 24 to June 6, with rehearsals beginning Monday, April 13.  Over a seven-week period there will be approximately thirty rehearsals, the majority of which will be Monday through Friday, 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. There will be no weekend rehearsals and none scheduled Friday through Monday of Memorial Day weekend.
